Facts on Quartz Materials for Microscope Slides, Cover Slips and Windows

Quartz is the material of choice for laboratory applications where UV transparency is an absolute must and/or where chemical purity and high temperature utility are required. The degree of quartz-transparency is defined by the raw material purity and the method of manufacture. There are two basic types of manufactured quartz: 1) fused-quartz and 2) fused-silica, also referred to as synthetic quartz. The raw material for fused quartz is a natural quartz sand whereas fused-silica or synthetic quartz is a result of a chemical process (SiCl4). The fusion process is either electric(most common), electric-arc, flame or plasma. These combinations produce a variety of quartz materials with varying purity, transparency, physical, electrical and thermal properties.

For your consideration, we offer the 0.040" thick microscope slide in two grades of fused quartz and one grade of synthetic:

  1. EF Grade of Fused Quartz (GE 124). This grade is an electrically-fused product with a hydroxyl content of 5pmm or less and is most useful for those that are concerned with the hydroxyl absorption band at 2700nm. Cation chemistry and bubble content are very similar to the FF Grade.
  2. FF Grade of Fused Quartz (Tosoh SGM-N). This is our standard grade of quartz and is considered appropriate for most laboratory and window applications. The FF grade is a flame-fused quartz and is characterized as high purity, virtually bubble free with a hydroxyl content of 200 ppm. It's useful transmission range is from 260 nm in the UV to over 2000nm in the infrared. This item will require a 40pc minimum order and a 6 week leadtime.
  3. PF Grade of Synthetic Quartz (Corning 7980). The material is plasma fused and is characterized as ultra pure and chlorine free. Absence of cation impurities provides for excellent optical transmission in the deep UV -- the useful transmission range is between 180nm through 2000nm. This item will require a 10pc minimum order, and an 8 week leadtime.
